How does Apple’s new 35W power adapter with two USB-C ports work?

Apple recently launched its new 35W dual USB-C port power adapter alongside the new MacBook Air powered by the new M2 chip. This is the first power adapter with two USB-C charging ports.

Apple’s 35W power adapter deploys the USB Power Delivery protocol, which distributes power automatically between the devices based on their requirements.

Describing the power-sharing mechanism in the adapter, Apple says two devices can be charged simultaneously using the adapter. When you charge a single device, it charges at 35W.

However, when you plug in two devices in the adapter simultaneously, power is distributed amongst devices based on their power requirements. In most cases, power is evenly distributed.

For example, when you connect a Mac notebook and an iPhone or iPad, each device receives up to 17.5W.

When you connect an iPhone and iPad and an AirPod/Apple Watch, iPhone receives up to 27.5W, and the Apple Watch or AirPods receive up to 7.5W.

Apple 35W Dual USB-C Port Compact Power Adapter is available at $59.
