There are several browsers on the market that allow you to do a variety of tasks. Though Safari, as the default browser on Mac, houses a number of security features, some of you may prefer the capabilities provided by a third-party browser like Chrome, Firefox, etc, and want to choose it as your default. In this post, I’ll show you how to quickly change your default web browser on Mac running macOS Venture or earlier.
What is a default web browser?
The phrase “default browser” refers to a browser that is set to run automatically, often while viewing web documents or clicking on web links. Safari is the default browser on Apple devices, but if you want to use anything else, you can easily change the default web browser on your Mac, iPhone, or iPad.
Note: If you can’t find your preferred browser in the list of default browsers, it might not be installed on your Mac. In that case, you need to first install it.
Apple has not only included new features such as Stage Manager with the new macOS, but they have also overhauled the Settings app to make it much simpler and easier to use.
How to set the default browser in macOS Ventura
- Click on the () Apple logo from the Mac menu bar.
- Click System Settings.
- Head to Desktop and Dock.
- Scroll down to Default web browser → Select a desired browser from the dropdown menu.
If you haven’t yet upgraded to the latest macOS version and are looking forward to changing the default browser in your macOS Monterey, or earlier, follow the steps outlined below.
How to set the default browser in macOS Monterey or earlier
- Head to the () Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen.
- Select System Preferences.
- Click General.
- From the dropdown next to Default web browser, choose a browser to make default.
To change the default browser while using the Chrome app, open the app and select Set as default from the pop-up menu.
Switch the default browser from Safari to Chrome to have Chrome open links instead of Safari.
